European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
